Power of the Tongue

Matthew 12:34-37
You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgement people will give account for every careless word they speak; for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.

12:33-35
The Pharisees were accusing Jesus of blasphemy because of His revealing to them that He was the son of God. Accusing Jesus of blasphemy is blasphemy in itself. Their hard feelings, their refusal of who He was, and their plot to kill Him revealed the evil in their own hearts. They were men of religious power that had twisted God's truth and were in need of radical change.

12:36-37
the day of judgement- this refers to Christ's second coming and His futuristic position as judge of the world.

every careless word-  this is telling us that we will be held accountable for every false accusation, false testimony, all words that have been spoken against Jesus Christ. Words that have been spoken against His people, have been spoken against Him. We will have to answer for all the wicked and harsh words that have come out of our mouths.

by your words you will be justified- your words are the outward evidence and the outward profession of what is truly in your heart. This is how you will be judged, by what is in your heart. You will be justified  by your good words, your heart being full of goodness, kindness, love, compassion. On the other foot, people's evil words will be evidence by which they will be condemned. It is kind of like when someone is arrested and read their Miranda rights. They are told that anything they say can be and will be used against them. This is really no different. On the day of judgement, your words will either testify for you or they will testify against you in the face of Almighty God and the judge, His Son, Jesus Christ.

We have all said things that we wish we could take back. The truth is, once we speak those regrettable words, the damage is done. That's why it is so important not to allow ourselves to say things out of anger. As humans, when we get mad, our goal is to say anything that we think will hurt the person we are mad at. Later, we feel terrible for those things we have said. Jesus said that what comes out of our mouths is what is coming out of our hearts. If we train our hearts to store up hatred, then hatred is what we will speak of. If we train our hearts to store up love, better yet, store up Jesus, which is the word made flesh, Jesus is what will come out of our mouths. Does that make sense to you? Jesus was the word made flesh, if we study the word and hide it in our hearts then everything we say, all of our conversations, building each other up will all come out in form of love in Jesus Christ.

A while back, my thirteen year old daughter and I were talking about the cruel things that people say. I was explaining to her that we never know what someone is going through in their life. We could speak encouraging words to someone like, "you sure do look beautiful today". That person may have been getting ready to give up on life, they may have been at their breaking point and your kind words gave them hope and made them realize that life is worth living. Or, it could go the other way. You may say something hateful and hurtful to someone and that may be all they can take. Your discouraging words may have been the straw that broke the camels back and push that person over the edge and make them decide that life is too much to bear. Think about it.....Your words could give life to someone or they could take life away. This is what we need to realize, the amount of power the tongue possesses.

If all you speak are words of wickedness, words of deceit and discouragement, then I invite you to get to know Jesus Christ. If your heart is hard and does not overflow with love and kindness, this is your time to come to Him. He will take out your heart of stone and replace it with a heart of flesh. Other people can't change you and you can't change yourself, Jesus can change you right now. Pray the prayer of Faith and Confession. It can be found right here on this site. Give your life to Him today. Give your tongue new power, power to speak life. We are here for you if you need us. Simply email us and we will talk to you, give you support and provide encouragement. We love you and God bless you!

Father, I pray that you will teach us to control our tongue. Teach us to not speak out of anger but only out of love. Take away the pride and the evil that is in our hearts and replace it with love, joy, compassion and peace that comes from Jesus. Help us to see others as you do so that we may be blessings in their life in order to glorify you. In Jesus name, Amen.
