Renewing the Mind- Part 3

James 1:21
Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Pictures the stripping off of dirty clothes based on a desire to have nothing to do with the moral evil ever again. In place of filthy behavior, the implanted word must take root in God's people. This idea of God implanting His revealed truth reflect: Duet. 30:14-"the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart."; Jer. 31:33- "I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts."

Save your souls refers here to progressive sanctification and ultimately the completion of God's saving work on the last day.

Sanctification-  the state of growing in divine grace as a result of Christian commitment after baptism or conversion

Proverbs 6:23
for the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life.

We are working on renewing our mind. We want to change the way we think about things. We have been use to thinking like the world thinks and we now need to learn how to think with a sanctified mind. How can we learn to think in new terms so that it becomes second nature? There are two things we must start doing, praying and reading God's word.

Pray in every aspect of your day. Pray when you think things that you should not be thinking. Pray when you say things you should not be saying. Pray and ask God to change your way of thinking altogether. If you cussed a lot before you got saved, now you are trying to stop, pray each and every time a cuss word enters your mind and especially if one comes out of your mouth. Learning how to pray and how to be thankful will change your attitude and your mind. The more you thank Jesus for what He has done, the closer you will get to Him.

You must read God's word. The Bible is the Christian instruction manual. It's the map to heaven. If you do not read it, you will get lost along the route. You must read His word for yourself. That statement isn't just because someone might give you a false teaching, it is also how God instructs us as individuals. I guarantee you that if you just open up the Bible, to any spot, when you are having a bad day, you will read a scripture that will see you through the day. God talks to us through His word. If you aren't reading His word, how can He lead and guide you? Reading the Bible gives you a lot deeper understanding of what Jesus has done for you and what He expects from us. Reading, studying, and applying His word will change your attitude and the way you think.
If you think about it, the best and easiest way to learn is through repetition. Doing things over and over again. Isn't that how you learned worldly ideas and caught on to worldly traditions? It works the same way in the spiritual realm. If you read and study and pray over, and over, and over again, the instructions in the Bible become second nature to you. Believe it or not, if you stick to reading and praying and make it part of your everyday life, it does not take long to renew your mind.

Father I pray that you will give me strength to continue to renew my mind. Give me the wisdom and strength to read and pray fervently. Allow your word to reconstruct my mind and bring strength to my bones. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
