Renewing the Mind- Part 4

Ephesians 4:21-24
assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

Righteousness- acting in accord with divine or moral law : free from guilt or sin

Holiness-  To be holy is to be distinct, separate, in a class by oneself; to be holy is to be morally pure.

put off your old self- As Christians seek to do this, God makes it a reality. "Self" is the generic Greek for "man" or "human". People need inner transformation because their hearts are "deceitful above all things, and desperately sick" (Jeremiah 17:9).

renewed- Paul expressed the negative side of the new creation in verse 22 as putting off the old self while verses 23-24 express the positive side as an entire transformation of believers' inner selves, focusing here on their minds. Christians sometimes distinguish between knowledge of head and heart, but the Bible shows that they should love and serve the Lord with all that is in them, including their minds, at all times. The "renewal" or "transformation" of the mind is a process in which believers begin to think in new and right ways as they meditate  on the truths of God's word.

put on the new self- Paul focuses on the individual aspect of the corporate "new man" as described in 2:15- by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, by making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. Believers are created anew in Christ. 2:10- for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

created after the likeness of God- further shows the connection with the original creation in Genesis, where "God created man in His own image."

I hope that over the last few days, you have put some of these practices in place and have noticed differences in the way you think. We are now focusing on how we become righteous and holy. It is a process that takes a little time. Changing is not always easy but it can be done through the power of God.

We change our way of thinking by meditating on God's word. We must read His word and study it each day. You do not have to study an entire book or an entire chapter each day. You can take two or three verses and spend about thirty minutes or so dissecting those verses. It is better to fully understand what those few verses are saying rather than reading several books and not understanding any of it. God's word is direction for His people. It is the road map to help you find life. If you read God's word each day, you will find comfort, peace, and encouragement for your life. He will talk to you through His word. By reading the word each day, it starts to grow on you and you can feel your mind starting to change how it perceives things and how it processes situations. You will actually start to see the good in all situations you are in, no matter how bad they may be.

We talked in the last post about songs of praise. I can tell you from personal experience that when I decided to start obeying God and doing what He called me to do, I started listening to Gospel music all the time. I have an hour and a half long ride to and from work everyday. I started listen to Gospel music during the ride. It changed the way I thought. Within a week or two, I stopped cussing and stopped thinking about negative things. We are influenced by what we subject ourselves to. I am not saying to exclude yourself from people, but you must not subject yourself to worldly thinking anymore. God tells us to come out from the world and be separate. If you can separate what you do in leisure time from the world and start doing Godly things during that time, you will change the way you think. Listening to Gospel music also reminds me of all the great things that God has done in my life. It reminds me of what He brought me out of and what He is bringing me into. God is great and wonderful. He is almighty and controls all things. If you put your mind on Him, He will put His blessing on you. Gospel music also reminds me of how Holy God is; He is Holy, He is Holy, He is Holy, the Lord God Almighty!

Pray! We have to pray. If you want to have a personal relationship with God, you must pray. Praying is how we talk to God. I can promise you that once you learn how to pray and get an answer from God, you will not have to be told to pray anymore. Once you get an answer from God, you will be praying every chance that you get. I can't describe how magnificent it feels when you ask God to do something in your life and He does it. When you see that unfold and take place before your eyes and you know that God has made it happen, it's overwhelming. It's overwhelming with joy! It is great to get answers from God; I love to pray and I love to get an answer from God. We have to pray friends, that's the only way that you will be on the right track with God. You can't walk with Him and never talk to Him. We serve a very social God and He wants us to communicate with Him. Jesus is our intercessor. He's sitting at the right hand of God waiting for us to ask for something in His name. We have a God that wants to hear from us and a high priest that wants to see us get the answer.

We will continue to talk about renewing the mind. I pray that you are putting these ideas into practice. I realize that some of this may be a little repetitive but keep in mind that this is an important subject. You can't realize the full benefit of being saved until you can learn how to put off the old self and put on the new self. This is an inward process that requires outward profession and action. It takes time in most cases but it is very evident to see the changes. If you try any of these tactics that I have talked about, you will see changes in your life, how you act, react and how you think. I promise you that! I love you and continue to pray that you will surrender your mind to Jesus.

Father, I pray that your spirit will fill your child that has made a commitment to renewing their mind. Lord I ask that you will be with them and guide them in the process. Satan, I bind you in the name of Jesus and command that you turn loose God's property, in Jesus name I command it. Father, I declare liberty in these lives that have been brought to you. I pray that you will deliver them from the world, change their thinking Lord. Make them become doers of your word and show them that love and mercy are waiting to receive them. God please keep your loving arms around them. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
