The Armor of God

Ephesians 6:10-17
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.

Did you know that you are involved in warfare? We are in constant battle with the principalities of this world. The devil and his army are constantly pushing against us, hurling obstacles at us, and trying to cause us to fall out of the faith. The devil is building an army for the end days and he is recruiting every man, woman, and child that he can get his hands on. Although we are in battle with him, God has given us armor that we can use to withstand the blows. We need to be sure that we put on the whole armor of God.

The first battle armor that God gives us is the belt of truth. Know what is  true so that you are not tricked or deceived into believing false doctrine. In the book of James, it tells us that there will come a day when man will turn from true doctrine. Know the truth about God, Jesus, and His word. Read your bible and do not deprive yourselves of the truth.

The next battle armor that God gives us is the breastplate of righteousness. Once we receive salvation and obey God's word, we are clothed with righteousness. This is something that is challenging for most people to keep on. The world will recognize when you are wearing the breastplate of righteousness and your presence around them will convict them. The Bible tells us that we heap coals of fire upon the heads of those who are not saved. They will do and say things to get that breastplate off of you. They will fight with you, argue with you, try to tell you that you are doing wrong or that you are too religious, don't allow the devil to take that breastplate off! Keep wearing it and stand firm and be ready. The Bible tells us that many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord will deliver him out of them all!

God tells us to have our feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. Once again, you have got to know the word. Preachers and teachers can tell you anything if you don't know the word. Remember when the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness, even he knew the word. How can you be ready to fight the devil if he knows more about your weapons than you do? You've got to get in the word, bury yourself in it. Don't just read but study what you read, know the ins and outs of every verse. It is better to know everything there is to know about one or two verses than to read the entire Bible and not get any of it.

Take up the shield of faith to extinguish the flaming arrows. The devil is hurling flaming arrows at us all the time. We have to have that shield to keep those arrows from hitting us. Hold on tightly to the shield of faith. Don't let it slip or fall. You have to keep your faith in all the trying times of life. This is one of the areas that the devil will attack you in the most, in your faith. It is easy to have faith in the good times but you have to stand on your faith in the bad times too. When things are rough, when you think you're losing everything, when nothing seems to work in your favor, hold on to the shield of faith, believe God's promises, stand firm on His word; if He said it, He'll do it and if He spoke, He'll bring it to pass! Don't lose faith, don't lose faith, hold on to the shield of faith! God will prevail, He'll see you through, He'll bring you of it victoriously  It is your faith that makes you whole!

Finally, Paul tells us to put on the helmet of salvation and take the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God. Now some of us are walking around with just salvation. How are you going to whip the devil if all you have on is a helmet? Put on the whole armor of God! You can't beat the devil with just a helmet. If all you have is salvation and you don't know the word, the devil will tell you that you ain't saved every time you do anything. Every time someone gets saved, the devil tells them, "you aren't saved". Jesus said all we have to do is believe and call on His name and we shall be saved! Don't let the devil steal your salvation. The devil is a liar! He is a defeated foe and he has no power over God's children whatsoever. The devil only has as much power as you give him. That's right! The devil can only enter if you open the door. Use the sword, the word. Like I said before, you have to know the word for yourself. In the book of Revelation, talking about the end days, the Bible tells us that the anti-Christ will perform wonders and miracles that could trick even the believer  if that were possible. Even the believer! If you don't know that word, you will be tricked into doing any and all kinds of mess and craziness thinking and believing you are doing good. Don't let people tell you anything and you believe it; before you jump on the band wagon, do some research, check into it, know the word for yourself. You've got to have your sword drawn! If the devil gets through the rest of the armor, if he takes away your salvation, if he causes you to lose faith, if you know the word, at least you have a sword that you can fight him off with so that you can pick up the rest of your battle armor and put it back on!

Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. You have to pray. If you do not know how to pray, you will not get past the devil and the princes of the world. You have to know God and be on talking terms with Him. That's really what prayer is all about, talking to God. You can't do all the talking, when you are done, just sit quietly in His presence and let Him talk to you. He will talk to through the word. We have to pray always. Prayer doesn't have to just be at bed time. Pray all the time. Pray in the morning, pray at the lunch hour, pray at supper time, pray in the evening, pray at bedtime, pray in the shower and on the way to work. God loves to hear us talk to Him and He loves to answer our prayers. I love to pray and I love to get an answer from God!

Father, teach us how to pray. Teach us how to wear the armor that you have provided us. Teach us how to be on talking terms with you. Help us to realize that without prayer we will perish but with you we will run and not be faint. Thank you Lord for the gifts of your Spirit. Thank you for hearing us when we pray. In Jesus name, Amen!
