The Cost of Nothing

Hebrews 2:1-4
We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if we ignore such great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders, and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.

I have a riddle for you that I heard from one of my favorite preachers. What is greater than God, meaner than the devil and if you keep doing it, it will send you to hell? Think about it.........

What is greater than God? Nothing! What is meaner than the devil? Nothing! And you don't quit doing nothing, it'll send you to hell! That's a pretty good riddle, isn't it? I want talk to you about doing nothing. In the physical realm, doing nothing usually means having nothing. You can't have something if you do nothing about it. In the spiritual realm, nothing comes with a high cost, a deadly cost. Doing nothing can cost you your life!

There is nothing worse than doing nothing. The sin of omission. There is nothing more costly than indecision. If you have heard the word of God, you know what you should be doing and how you should be living and if you do nothing about it, you are omitting God from your life. People sit in Sunday service, they feel the conviction of the Holy Spirit, but when the preacher gives the altar call, they sit there like they are glued to their chair. They reject the conviction and do nothing about it. They reject God! If I can get you to see how doing nothing about it, about your salvation, can cost you your life; you will change your thinking.

When will you die? Do you know? Do any of us know? Of course not. We do not know when we will draw our last breath. Why are we willing to chance spending eternity in a place where there is fire, sulfur, suffering and pain and sorrow? If you think living life is depressing, imagine being tormented for eternity. I know that our minds can not fathom eternal life or eternal suffering. We are used to everything coming to an end. Our lives on this earth will come to an end and we do not know when. There will come a time when the living and the dead will be judged and will be eternally sentenced to paradise or to fire and brimstone. You can end up on the ladder end of the stick and it will be because you chose to do nothing about it.

Paul is telling us in this reading that we must pay more careful attention to what we have heard. We must pay careful attention to the teachings and the word of God, we must study it and apply it to our lives so that we do not drift away. How can you progress in an area if you know nothing about it? In order to progress in Christianity, you must seek God diligently. Where can you find Him?, in the Bible. You must know the word for yourself. If you do not know the word, anyone can tell you anything. Do not be mislead, know the word for yourself!

Everything that we have done will be judged. There will be a reward for the things that we have done. Thank God that some of those things we have done are under the blood of Jesus and are no longer remembered against us. If there is a reward and a judgement for the things we have done, how can we escape judgement if we neglect salvation and do nothing about it? Do not be tricked into thinking that just because you are ignorant to God's word that you are safe or excused from judgement. You are not excused, in fact you are judged harsher because you did nothing about it. Don't you see that your judgement will be worse for doing nothing than if you were saved and struggled. How can we escape so great salvation? It's kind of like "ignorance of the law is no excuse", ignorance of Jesus is no excuse.

We now know that nothing comes with a cost. The cost is death. There is nothing, in the spiritual realm, more costly than indecision. Do not ignore the conviction, the calling from the voice of God, Jesus tugging at your heart waiting for you to decide to let Him in. Today could be your last day on the face of the earth. Tomorrow could be too late. If you turn from Him now, you are rejecting God. I beg you to count the cost today. If you do not know where you would spend eternity if you were to die today, then please, stop ignoring it, and choose to do something about it.
