The Good Shepherd

Ecclesiastes 12:9-14
Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care. The Preacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one shepherd. My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of men. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Goad- a long, pointed stick used for prodding and guiding oxen while plowing.

12:11
The words of the wise are like goads- they help guide one along the proper path. Moreover, the words of the wise provide moral and intellectual stability like nails firmly fixed. Ultimately, such wisdom is given by one she…

Who is leading?

Galatians 5:16-26
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed of each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident; sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is not a law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

The Armor of God

Ephesians 6:10-17
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers …

Renewing the Mind- Part 2

Mark 4:24
And he sad to them, "pay attention to what you hear: with the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and still more will be added to you."

Measure refers to the attitude with which the word of Jesus is being received. If the listener embraces Jesus' message of the kingdom in a rich and profound way, then still more will be added to you; that is, God will take up residence in that heart and give increased understanding and blessing, both in this age and in the age to come.

Attitude has a whole lot to do with Christianity and renewing the mind. What kind of attitude do you have? I would like for you to think about something. Now that you have moved into this new life, you are an example to others. People you know, your friends and family, they are now going to be looking to you to see what is going to happen. You see, they have all heard of this transformation that has and is taking place in your life and they want to see how it is going to affect you. They w…

Renewing the Mind- Part 1

Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Discern- to detect with senses other than vision

Good- of a favorable character or tendency

Acceptable- capable or worthy of being welcomed

Perfect- being entirely without fault or defect

12:2
Evil still threatens the lives of Christians in today's age. We must resist the pressure of the world and the pressure that evil tries to enforce on us. Christians are to transform their lives as they make new their minds so that they are able to discern God's will.

By testing you may discern- in the Greek- dokimazo, which often has the sense of finding out the worth of something by putting it to use in actual practice.

Once we have received salvation from Jesus, we should begin to start the mind renewal process right away. We cannot continue to live our lives as we did before we were saved or before we b…
