The Good Shepherd

Ecclesiastes 12:9-14
Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care. The Preacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one shepherd. My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of men. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Goad- a long, pointed stick used for prodding and guiding oxen while plowing.

12:11
The words of the wise are like goads- they help guide one along the proper path. Moreover, the words of the wise provide moral and intellectual stability like nails firmly fixed. Ultimately, such wisdom is given by one shepherd, which is God.

12:13-14
The preacher has already pointed out the need to fear God and to keep His commandments.

The whole duty of men- involves genuine faith in God as well as works, which are the inevitable result of true faith. (James 2:14, 17, 26)

God will bring every deed into judgment- thus the importance of obeying His commands.

James 2:14
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?

James 2:17
So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

James 2:26
For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

God has given us the tools that we need to be successful in the Christian life. He has given us the instruction manual for becoming and being His children. What He has given us is Hi word, His promises that if we believe and trust Him, we cannot and will not fail. There are no other words that can lead us to life. There are no other books that offer the gift of life. God has set the stage and He has provided the need, all we have to do is read it, believe it, study it, and apply it to our lives. If we do these things diligently and in truth, we can how to walk by faith, being lead by the Spirit.

There is one shepherd, one way, one life, one truth, one body, and one Spirit, one God, and one Son. There is no other way, there is no other life. Anything that goes outside the realm of what the Bible teaches is not from God. Anything that is contrary to what the Bible teaches is against God. This is the reason that it is important for God's people to know His word, to study it from front to back, cover to cover. If you do not know the word for yourself, you could, at any time, be tricked into learning, believing, and applying false doctrine.

We need to fear God and keep His commandments. The Bible says that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Our fear for paying the ultimate price for our sins is usually what drives us to our knees and brings us to salvation. Every man's deeds will have to stand judgment at some point in time, on that great day of judgment. I know that a lot of young people think, "I'll just wait until I get older and then I will start going to church and getting into religion." A lot of other people say, I've been hearing about the coming of Jesus since I was little, it isn't going to happen in my lifetime, I have plenty of time to get saved." My question to you is, what if today was the last day of your life? Where would you spend eternity?

I urge you to pray the prayer of faith and give your life to Jesus today. The prayer is right here in this website. Please do not risk another day of spending eternity in everlasting pain and suffering!! Jesus loves you and wants you to invite Him into your life and heart today. God bless you.

Father, you are the shepherd of our lives. Guide us as we walk this earth. Keep our hearts and minds in tune with you. Lead us to living water, help us to encourage others. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
