Is God in Us?

1John 4:13-15
We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God.
testify- to bear witness; give or afford evidence
Savior- a title for Christ which emphasizes his work of salvation
Brief History
Date Written- around AD 80 - AD 90
Writer- the writer is not clearly identified but scholars believe it was written by John the brother of James; the same John that wrote the Gospel of John. The writing styles and verbiage are very similar
Main Point of Book- discernment through the Holy Spirit

In order to answer the question "Is God in Us?", we have to answer three other questions:
  1. Is Jesus the Son of God and the Savior of the world?
  2. Have we qualified ourselves to receive the Holy Spirit?
  3. Does the Holy Spirit live and act in us/our lives?
The disciples were witnesses to Jesus and his authority as the Son of God. These testimonies were recorded so that we would also know about them and believe. Jesus was 100% God and 100% man. You can't dissect him. If he were simply a man, then it is stacked against us. Jesus could not have endured the cross if he were not God. Jesus decided when to die. Hanging on the cross he said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit."

We qualify ourselves by believing that Jesus is the Son of God and was sent as our Savior; a once and for all sacrifice for sins. Then we accept him and make him Lord of our lives by faith. The most evident way to know that one has Jesus on the inside is by the complete and obvious change in their life that only Jesus can bring about. No other religion offers or can provide this kind of transformation in a person. Only God can change the heart of a man or a woman; we can't even change it ourselves.

Now that we have accepted Christ and have made him Lord of our life, he is going to send us the Helper, the Holy Spirit. God sends his Holy Spirit to live in us. The Spirit acting in our lives is evidence that we are obeying God and that we are one with him. God's Spirit bears witness with our spirit. Because of the acting of the Holy Spirit in our lives, "Old things have passed away; all things have become new." (2Corinthians 5:17)
