The Great Commission

Matthew 28:16-20:
Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Commission- a special assignment from a person of authority.
Disciple- a person who follows and learns from another person or group, especially a believer who      observes the teachings of Jesus.
Baptism- an observance signifying a believer's cleansing from sin through Christ's atoning death; a testimony of faith and a pledge to walk in newness of life with Jesus Christ; memorializes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Gospel- good news

Who was Matthew?
Maththaios in Greek; name means "gift of God". Matthew was a tax collector. Tax collectors were treated as being ritually unclean by the Jews. They were known for "over charging" people so that they could make a profit after the Roman leaders got their cut of the dough.

In his risen state, Jesus exercises absolute authority over heaven and earth. This shows us Jesus' deity. He tells the 11 to make disciples of all nations. Jesus' ministry in Israel was the beginning of proclaiming the Gospel which would later be taken to all nations of the earth. Scripture tells us that Jesus came to minster to God's chosen people, the Jews. Jesus is now commanding his disciples to spread the news all over the world, first to the Jew, then to the Gentile (that's us). They were not only commanded to spread the Gospel but to also teach everything that Jesus had commanded. Jesus wanted them to teach people what they should do to be more like Christ. He then reassures them that they are not alone in this. He tells them that he is always with them. As they go out and teach the words of the Master, they can be confident in their teachings knowing that the Master is there with them.

As disciples or followers of Christ, this commission has been extended to us also. We are to go out and spread the word of the good news of Jesus Christ. God is raising up an army for the last days. If you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you are a commissioned officer in the army of God. He has provided you with your weapon, a sword-the word of God. It is your duty to carry this message out to the rest of the world. One of the blessings of the Internet is the ability to reach people all over the globe. In many areas, people are not fortunate enough to have access to websites like this one. I challenge you to take this gospel to the part of the world that you reside in. If we all do our part, we can get God's word and the message of Jesus Christ to everyone near and far. God bless you in your quest to obey this command!
