God Can't be Bought

Acts 8:20-23:
Peter answered: "May your money parish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin."

Summary
If you read the entire story in scripture, you will find that this is talking about a man named Simon, he practiced sorcery for a time. He heard Phillip preach, believed on Jesus and was baptized. Later on, Peter and John came to town because they had been hearing of all the people that were being saved where Phillip was preaching. They laid their hands on the people so that they could receive the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw this, he wanted to pay Peter and John for them to give him the ability to lay his hands on people to receive the Holy Spirit. Of course, they admonished him for it and told him to repent.

Isn't that how some people still think today? Maybe not to the point of buying the gift of the Holy Spirit, but don't some people think they can buy the gift of salvation? I heard a man tell his wife one time, "I'm not going to church today, but, here is my tithe; take it with you; that's all they want anyhow." Wow! What a statement. First of all, this man would have been better off to keep his money. He thought as long as he sent his money to the church, he was covered so to speak. God isn't a poker player. Just because our ante is in the pot, doesn't mean we can enter the kingdom of God. Unfortunately, a lot of people are deceived by this concept. They think that paying tithes will get them to heaven. It won't!

God can't be bought. Last time I checked, there weren't any admission tickets to heaven being sold. We do not enter God's kingdom based on our own work or because we are "paid up". We can accept salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, believing he is the Son of God, died, and was resurrected, and is on his throne at the right hand of God the Father. This is the only way! Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one enters my Father's kingdom except through me."

In Matthew 19:20-21, it says, "The young man said to him, 'All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?' Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." You see the key is following Jesus, not paying tithes. I'm not telling you not pay your tithes. We have to give God back his portion of His money. What I am telling you is that paying tithes just to be in "compliance" will not get you to heaven. Your heart has to be in the right place. In order for your heart to be right, you have follow Jesus and have a personal relationship with him.

We have all heard the old saying "money can't buy you love", well, it's the same with God. Money won't buy you a seat in heaven. It won't even get you in the door. You have to establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I am afraid this concept has deceived many people for years. I pray that as you read this, you will be convicted by the Holy Spirit to realize that you will not get to heaven by your good deeds and deicide to enter into a relationship with Jesus. We love you! God bless you!
