The Ten Commandments Series- 1st Commandment

Exodus 20:3
You shall have no other gods before me.

Summary
God demands exclusive loyalty to him and him only. Deuteronomy 6:14 says, "Do not follow other gods, the gods of the peoples around you." He will not tolerate the worship of any other gods. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth and stands alone as God of all, in all, and through all. Because of his sovereignty, he cannot accept mankind's worship of another god. This means that monotheism, the worship of the one true God, is the only acceptable belief and practice. God is jealous and will not play second best behind anyone or anything. Exodus 34:14 says, "Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God." How can God be this demanding one might ask? Because he is Creator of all things, we are his creation and he has dominion over us, all the earth, below the earth, and of the heavens above.

God demands our worship to be directed to him only. Not because he needs it or has to have it in order to sustain himself, but simply because he desires to be in relationship with us liken to a father with his children. God gets hurt and angry just your dad on earth would if you decided you were going to make someone else daddy in your life. In Jeremiah 1:16, it says, "I will pronounce my judgments on my people because of their wickedness in forsaking me, in burning incense to other gods and in worshiping what their hands have made."

God is also a very patient God. He sends us messages and gives us signs to help "wake us up" and draw us to him. We are stubborn people. We are too busy serving other gods in our lives. When I say, "serving other gods", I am talking about the things that we have raked on our list of priorities to be more important than God. These are things such as money, relationships, sports, exercising, sex, partying, and the list goes on and on. We have to turn from these sources of idolatry in our lives and put our focus back on God. Jeremiah 35:15 says, "Again and again I sent all my servants the prophets to you. They said, 'Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and reform your actions; do not follow other gods to serve them. Then you will live in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.' But you have not paid attention or listened to me."

Who or what are you serving? It is time as a human race to put our time and attention back on God, our Creator. If you put him first in your life, everything else will fall into place. God bless you! We love you!
