Same Sex Marriage Gets Support from Church Group

The United Church of Christ is suing North Carolina for the ban it has on same sex marriage. It is not that they necessarily support same sex marriage, but they are afraid that if the ban stands, government will start trying to regulate other areas of church function and ceremony. The position of the United Church of Christ is in serious debate on this matter. Some agree with the strategy while others believe that the church is sending out the message that they are condoning same sex marriage.

There is no doubt that Christianity and the church have come under heavy attack in recent times. It seems that the faith has been under fire from every angle and in every arena. We knew this was going to happen. The Bible predicts a time when few will follow the faith and many will turn their ear to a perverted gospel. I believe we are in those times now. As a church, we have to take a stand and draw the line in the sand somewhere. We cannot keep giving in to the societal whims and political correctness of this age.

There are two verses of Scripture that come to mind in dealing with matters such as these. 1 Corinthians 16:13, which states, "Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong." We have to stand firm in the beliefs and values that are set forth in God's breathed Word, the Bible. He set the standards for godly living and for righteousness. For us, as mere creation, to abhor, go against, and show total disregard for how the Creator demands us to live, is putting ourselves above God and amending His word without the authority to do so. The other verse that comes to mind is Ephesians 5:11, which states, "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." If nothing else has proven to be a "fruitless deed", same sex marriage has. It does nothing to add to the order of or edification of creation. We must not stand idly by and allow this practice to be consecrated with a ceremony that is intended to bring glory to God. Instead, we should be focusing on showing this sect of the human race the love of Christ with rebuke and reproach. How can we fulfill our obligation to create disciples for Christ, share the gospel, and draw people to salvation if we are not bringing the sins of the people to light? By supporting this notion, we will be putting out the signal that same sex partners are safe from the judgment and wrath of God. In this respect, allowing same sex marriage to be performed by the church is not helping this sect of society but only hurting them by giving them a false sense of security.

By condoning and participating in the sin of others, will we hear on that Great Day, "Well done my good and faithful servant"? Genesis 19:5-7 says, "They called to Lot, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.' Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him  and said, 'No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing'". If this was considered wicked in Lot's time, it is considered wicked today. My Bible says that God does not change, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever!

If the concern is what will happen next if the government keeps the ban on same sex marriage then let us trust in Jesus. If we stand firm on His word and hold tight to His teaching, He will not fail us. He will work this out for His good and His glory. Let Jesus worry about tomorrow for it is not guaranteed for any of us today!
