Children of the Lord

Ephesians 6:1-4 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
As children of the Lord, it is crucial that we be obedient to our parents. Not just as children, but also as adults. Our parents gave us birth. They are the bodily reason that we are here and that we are who we have become. By honoring your parents, you are honoring God. Paul tells us here in his epistle that the commandment to honor your mother and father is the first commandment with a promise. In Deuteronomy 5:16, the Word tells us that by honoring our parents, we will have long life on earth. In Mosaic Law, anyone that cursed or struck his parents was to be put to death. This underscores the high regard that God has for us to honor our earthly parents w…

Once Lost, Now Found

1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Jesus has caused us to be born again. It isn't because of anything great that we have done. In fact, as sinners, we didn't have sense enough to look for Jesus on our own. We did not choose Him, He chose us! (John 15:16-Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit). I just finished reading “Twelve Ordinary Men” last night. Although the focus of this book is to identify each of the Twelve as individuals, it labors to underscore the fact that Jesus chooses us. He chooses us, or calls us, at a point in our lives when we appear t…

Don't Let Static Stop You

Ezra 5:7-17 They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace.Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands. Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls? We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them. And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up.But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. But in the first year …

Skipping School of the Master

John 19:1-8 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands. Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him. Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid
Two things from this passage of Scripture that are clear to me: One, Pilate could not find any fault or wrong doing in Jesus. Two, He was afraid of who …

The Knowledge of God

Ephesians 3:14-21 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
We have received life with God, our Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ. Because we know Jesus, we also know the Father. So what can we or should we expect from this new life and knowledge that we have been give…

Finding Joy in Discipline

Hebrews 12:3-11
For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present s…

It's Easy to Envy

Psalms 73:1-3 Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart. But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well-nigh slipped. For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
The psalmist in this passage almost turned away from God. He saw that the wicked, the unfaithful, and probably even the faithless seemed to have it all. They were prospering with wealth while the righteous were barely getting by. These well off folk didn't even regard God Almighty, yet they seemed to have it all. Isn't that what we think sometimes? I know I do. It seems like the unfaithful flourish while the faithful struggle for survival. As a result of his paradigm, the psalmist contemplated his faith and was almost led astray by the glitz and glamour of the unrighteous. C.S. Lewis once said, “It would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak…We are far too easily pleased”. I think we can all relate to how Asaph was feeling in …

Who Will You Serve?

Image
Joshua 24:13-18 And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and olive yards which ye planted not do ye eat. Now therefore fear theLord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye theLord. And if it seem evil unto you to serve theLord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve theLord. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake theLord, to serve other gods; For theLordour God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom w…

He is There

Deuteronomy 32:7-12 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee. When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel. For theLord's portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: So theLordalone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.
There are times in life when we allow the cares of this world to overtake us. We get caught up in the “rat race” and easily become overwhelmed. It is in these times when we start to feel alone. We even harbor these feelings of loneliness in …

Jesus is the Way

John 14:1-11 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? th…
